Our Six Day Trip To Arizona

Friday we arose early and set off for Lake Havasu City where my family is gathering for us to visit. We'll spend about a week with my sister India and her husband George.  India has arranged for my mother to fly in via Las Vegas and my brother Steve lives in Lake Havasu City.  Others of my family and Georges may drop in for a visit.

We motored north to I-40 then west a short distance to the Historic Route 66 turn-off.  This is a long section of the original US Route 66 which remains.  We saw several series of Burma Shave signs, many freight trains and folks enjoying the historic towns along the route.  We passed, but didn’t visit, Grand Canyon Caverns along the way near Peach Springs.

Because of our early start we arrived at our end-of-day destination about 3:00.  After texting India, we continued into Lake Havasu City and had a wonderful visit with everyone who was assembled.  It was supper time so we want to George’s favorite Mexican restaurant.  Good stuff.

We seem to have arrived in time for some exciting events.  I’ll tell you about them after they occur.  India put us in the guest house which has the best view of Lake Havasu and the city.  We’re looking forward to our stay here.  It will be good to stay in one place for a while in the middle of our trip.  Thanks George and India!

Sunday we were up and out by 9:30 to visit the local swap meet.  We bought sunglasses and a few small things.  Steve and India led a tour of wonderful and unusual houses they know of in the city.  We saw previous residences and prospective properties.  Later we all  went downtown for a car show.  George was asked to display one of his nearly perfect cars to represent the City of Lake Havasu City for the event.  We first visited a friend of his with a garage full of beautifully restored cars and Stephen and I had a good time inspecting them all.

The car show was a small preview of the upcoming show next month.  There were close to 75 very interesting cars on display on McCullough St.  Some were full-on race cars and others were beautiful stock restorations.  All the cars were well presented and most were muscle cars.  I think it was a wonderful show.

Monday we shopped at an interesting collectable store downtown, ate lunch then returned to purchase decorations for India’s guest cabins at the ranch.  We returned home for grilled chicken by George.

Tuesday we visited the Lake Havasu City Museum where we learned about Jim McCullough and his Disney partner planning and populating the city almost single handedly.  Good work guys.  It’s too bad we lost Jim in 1977 before it really took off.  We dined on Chicken Tacos then viewed London Bridge after dark and watched George and India’s adult son, Jacob, win a close slow-pitch softball game.  It’s been a long time since either of us have watched a ballgame in person and we enjoyed cheering and booing as appropriate.

Wednesday my mother was picked-up by the airport shuttle at 5:30 a.m. and whisked off to Las Vegas for her flight back to Costa Mesa.  India and George returned to Carbon Canyon, CA with their beautiful motorhome and Stephen and I repositioned our trailer in the Sepulveda compound.

Darlene arranged for a tour of the lighthouses on Lake Havasu by boat.  Smaller replicas of lighthouses around the U.S. have been constructed on Lake Havasu as navigational aids by a local lighthouse association.  They are recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard and are very useful for boaters after dark.  They are excellent representations and stand from 15 to 25 feet tall.

Stephen visited with us in India’s guest house this evening and we had some stimulating intellectual discussions.  It’s really fun to get to visit my brother again.  Darlene especially enjoys his demeanor and whit.

Thursday we drove to Bullhead City to visit Darlene’s long-time friend, Bob Klock, and his newly found friend Esther.  We ate lunch at the Black Bear CafĂ© and talked a while afterward.  We toured their resort facilities and were amazed by the large ballroom.  It made us want to move there, a little.

Tomorrow we travel to Las Vegas without our trailer to visit Isabel and her family.  Isabel is the hostess at Toby Keith’s Restaurant in Harrah’s and the long-distance friend of Dan, Darlene’s youngest son.  I’ll tell you all about that in our next episode.
