The Magnificent Place of Yuma

After our morning walk at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, we drove north past the Border Patrol Checkpoints.  We expected to be searched as we are in a

22' motorhome, but the agents were universally polite and uninterested in checking us out.  A cursory review of our Hawaii drivers license and we were passed through.  There is much debate in this country about securing our border with Mexico.  We were amazed at the number and frequency of Border Patrol and County Sheriffs vehicles we encountered throughout Southern Arizona.  Homeland Security dollars at work.

The trip into Yuma brought us out of the mountains into flat desert terrain.  Yuma sits on the banks of the Colorado River.  Steamboats used to routinely supply this area, bringing goods up from the Sea of Cortez that had been shipped from San Francisco.  There are two significant historical sites in Yuma, the Quartermaster Depot and the Yuma Territorial Prison.  All of the army posts in the southwest were supplied out the the central Quartermaster's warehouse in

Yuma, due to the aforementioned riverboats.  The Yuma Territorial Prison housed both men and women for numerous offences, from adultery and polygamy up to murder.  The prison has a colorful history, with numerous riots and jail breaks documented in the museum.  They have pictures of prisoners with their biographies attached, so you get a real feel for the prison population.  Quite interesting.

That night we crossed the river into California and stayed at the Rivers Edge RV Park, it was literally on the banks of the Colorado.  It is an absolutely huge park filled with snowbirds from up north, over 400 sites and mostly full.  Living in Hawaii eliminates the need for that seasonal migration.

Tomorrow, San Diego.
